Our online store's product images have received a much-needed update! Vanamo bracelet with pink beads - from 200 euros
Vanamo, Linnaea borealis, is a delicate flower of the lush spruce forest. The fragile plant rides on soft moss and raises one flower stalk after another from its stem. The modest twinflower is the shy beauty of the Finnish forest. Eino Leino's (1878 - 1926) beloved poem Nocturne breathes the timeless message of a Finnish summer night: The scents of twinflower and the shadows of water, from them I make the song of my heart. The verses of young Eino Leino have also inspired jewelry designer Kirsti Doukas. Her Vanamo jewelry's pink beads glow with gentle charm.
Halikko bracelet / extension piece - from 80 euros
The model for this Kalevala Koru piece originates from the 12th century. The filigree bead necklace was part of a valuable treasure found in Halikko's Joensuu, along with three silver cross pendants. The treasure had been hidden in the ground in a roughly made clay pot around the time Finland converted to Christianity, about 800 years ago. The hider could have been a priest who wanted to save the valuables from pagan Finns, or equally, the hiders could have been church robbers who hid their loot – no one knows. In any case, the treasure hoard tells of restless times, a period of upheaval that initiated a new direction of development in Finland.
The lion on the jewelry, whose mane spreads like sunbeams, has its prototype in the Halikko treasure. The beast depicted in Romanesque style likely has its roots in Gotland and possibly even its dies, but the latter's model has been widely imitated and modified in Finland in the 10th and 11th centuries. Kalevala Koru's "Sun Lion" thus brings a breath of fresh air from a time when the influences of Christian Europe spread to the Finns via the Baltic Sea islands.
The Migration Period, 400-600 AD, was a time of independent cultural formation in Finland. The prototype for this ring dates back to the Migration Period and was found in Karjaa. Widening in the middle, with twisted edges, the ring captivates with its simple beauty. The original ring was made of bronze.
