Northern peoples developed a special relationship with waterfowl. For them, waterfowl symbolized fertility. For the people of the North, the birds' return in spring was a promise of summer, a new beginning. With the return of waterfowl, it was known that nature would awaken again. Waterfowl held the magic of fertility. This bird motif is from Luurila, Hattula, dating back to the 11th century.
