Description
Note! The chain has some wear.
The lion on the piece, with its mane spreading like sunbeams, is based on the Halikko hoard. The fittings on both sides, however, mimic the strap-mounts found in Rikala, Halikko. The roots of the beast depicted in Romanesque style are likely in Gotland, and possibly those of the strap-mounts as well, but the latter's design was extensively imitated and modified in Finland during the 10th and 11th centuries. Kalevala Koru's "Sun Lion" thus brings a breath of fresh air from a time when influences from Christian Europe were conveyed to the Finns through the Baltic Sea islands.
