Description
This Kalevala Koru model is based on an original from the 12th century. The filigree pearl necklace was part of a valuable treasure found in Joensuu, Halikko, along with three silver cross pendants. The treasure was hidden in the ground in a rough clay pot around the time Finland became Christian, about 800 years ago. The hider could have been a priest who wanted to save the valuables from pagan Finns, or it could just as well have been church robbers who hid their loot – nobody knows. In any case, the treasure hoard tells of restless times, a period of transition that initiated a new direction of development in Finland.
