Description
The engraving on the second-grade version is on the back of the "pendant" part. The engraving consists of two letters in script.
The lion on the jewellery, with its mane spreading like the sun's rays, is inspired by the Halikko treasure. The fittings on either side, in turn, mimic the strap-ends found in Rikala, Halikko. The roots of the beast depicted in Romanesque style are likely in Gotland, and possibly those of the strap-ends too, but the latter's design was widely imitated and modified in Finland during the 11th and 12th centuries. Kalevala Koru's "Sun Lion" thus brings a breath of fresh air from a time when influences from Christian Europe were conveyed to Finns through the islands of the Baltic Sea.
