Description
Thor was the Vikings' god of thunder. Thor used his hammer to rule and administer justice. During thunderstorms, Thor was believed to ride across the sky in a chariot pulled by goats. The hammer's blows created the rumbling of thunder, and the sparks became lightning. Pendants depicting the hammer became a common symbol of Thor, believed to also possess protective powers against evil. These pendants were especially worn by fierce Vikings. The prototypes for the jewelry originate from the Viking Age, 800-1050 AD. The larger pendant was found in Ylipää, Lieto, while the smaller one is modeled after a pendant from Kansakoulumäki, Laitila.
