Description
The prototype of this Kalevala Koru model dates back to the 12th century. The filigree bead necklace was part of a valuable treasure found in Halikko Joensuu, along with three silver cross pendants. The treasure was hidden in the ground in a rough clay pot around the time Finland became Christian, approximately 800 years ago. The hider could have been a priest who wanted to save the valuables from pagan Finns, or equally, the hiders could have been church robbers who hid their loot – no one knows. In any case, the treasure trove tells of turbulent times, a period of transition that initiated a new direction of development in Finland.
The 45cm (Grade 2) necklace's sphere is in good condition, with some tarnishing on the chain.
