Description
The large axe-shaped silver plate pendant, which served as the model for this piece of jewelry, was discovered in the village of Lämsä in Kuusamo as part of a hoard of silver treasures that had been hidden in the ground. The piece dates back to the Crusade era, 1050–1150 AD. This was a time of both prosperity and turbulent events, and treasure hoards were used to protect against looting. The surface of the jewelry is adorned with abundant stamp motifs, suggesting that it may have been crafted in Karelia.
