Description
Thor was the Norse god of thunder. Thor used his hammer to rule and administer justice. During thunderstorms, Thor was believed to ride across the sky in a chariot drawn by goats. The hammer's blows created the rumbling of thunder, and the sparks produced lightning. A pendant depicting the hammer became a common symbol of Thor, believed to also possess protective powers against evil. The pendant was especially worn by fierce Vikings. The jewelry designs originate from the Viking Age, specifically 800-1050 AD. The larger pendant was found in Ylipää, Lieto, while the smaller one is modeled after a pendant from Kansakoulumäki, Laitila.
