Description
This Kalevala Koru model is based on an original from the 12th century. The filigree bead necklace was part of a valuable treasure found in Halikko Joensuu, along with three silver cross pendants. The treasure was hidden in the ground in a rough earthenware pot around the time Finland became Christian, about 800 years ago. The hider may have been a priest who wanted to save the valuables from the pagan Finns, or it could equally have been church robbers who hid their loot – no one knows. In any case, the treasure hoard speaks of turbulent times, a period of upheaval that initiated a new direction of development in Finland.
