Description
This Kalevala Koru design is based on an original from the 12th century. The filigree bead necklace was part of a valuable treasure found in Joensuu, Halikko, along with three silver cross pendants. The treasure was hidden in the ground in a roughly made clay pot around the time of Finland's conversion to Christianity, approximately 800 years ago. The hider could have been a priest who wanted to save the valuables from pagan Finns, or equally, the hiders could have been church robbers who concealed their loot – nobody knows. In any case, the treasure hoard tells of turbulent times, a transitional period that initiated a new direction of development in Finland.
