Description
This jewelry is based on an ornate belt fitting from Janakkala, Häme. Leather belts with metal fittings have been known since prehistoric times, and later, many folk costumes were also decorated with lightweight fittings. Women traditionally carried practical items at their waists, such as keys, small purses, knives, and combs. Both mothers and daughters wore these, and they enjoyed their jingle when dancing. It was believed that the sound kept evil spirits away. Perhaps the jingle also attracted the attention of young men.
